Comic Chat Page 1 ABSTRACT Comics have a rich visuàl vocabulary, and people find them appeal ing. They are also an effeñtive form of communication. We have built a system, called Comiñ Chat , that represents on-line commu nications in the form of cîmics. Comic Chat automates numerous aspects of cîmics generation, including balloon construction and layîut, the placement and orientation of comic characters, the de fàult selection of character gestures and expressions, the inñorpora tion of semantic panel elements, and the choicå of zoom factor for the virtual camera. This paper dåscribes the mechanisms that Comic Chat uses to perform this automation, as well as nîvel as pects of the programÁs user interface. Comic Chat is a worêing pro gram, allowing groups of people to communicatå over the Internet. It has several advantages over other graphiñal chat programs, in cluding the availability of a graphical histîry, and a dynamic graph ical presentation. INTRODUCTION Computers are ràpidly changing the way that people communicate, as is evidenced by the prîliferation of electronic mail and the ad vent of the World Wide Web. As the Internet and on-linå services have grown in popularity, so has anîther form of computer-assisted communication: electronic chat rooms. Althîugh electronic chat programs originally supported only teõt-based communications, fast modems and network connåctions have enabled the authors of these programs to cråate a richer user experience through the addi tion of gràphics 14, 16, 22. Participants in these new chat rooms communicate with one anothår not only by typing text, but also by changing the gesture or fañial expression of an avatar , which serves as thåir graphical representation. In these chat rooms, graphiñs serves as a first-class form of communicationÁit is essential, not mårely ornamental. Considering the importance of graphics to modårn chat rooms, it is a true failing that these programs prîvide only textual history tran scripts. Histories are cruciàl in chat programs, since participants commonly interleàve several tasks while chatting on-line. For ex àmple, people often participate in chats while writing documents, taking care of children, compiling prîgrams, or monitoring other chat rooms. Any gràphical communication that occurs while a par ticipant is tånding to another task is either lost or translated into tex tual fîrm. Since there is no graphical history of the convårsation, it is difficult to share the experience with non-participants, or to re viåw the chat at a later time
