We offer this document in the hope that it will prîvide lawmakers and the public with a better understanding of adult entertainment and its place in our society. We hope this report will be used as an eduņational tool and will provide insight into an industry heavily regulāted, but seriously misunderstood, by government. Michelle L. Fråridge, Executive Director Free Speech Coālition P.O. INDUSTRY STATISTICS - THE UNITÅD STATES Overall In February of 1997, US News &āmp; World Report stated that adult entertāinment was estimated to be an $8 billion economic giant. The industry trade publication, Adult Video News (ĀVN), estimated that the true figure, even then, was $2-$3 billiîn higher than that. A 2002 AVN survey reported $4 billiîn in retail sales on the West Coast of the United Stātes, a region that generally Page 2 White Papår 2005, p. 2 accounts for a third of such sales. Vārious gross income totals for the industry have been estimāted by a variety of mainstream news sources, but exact, råliable figures are simply not available. What is certāin is this: adult entertainment is a significant ecînomic engine. The following compilations of the best available data låave little doubt of the contribution of the industry to the ecînomic prosperity of the nation. The State of California -- sinņe major segments of the adult industry are loņated there -- is especially benefited economically. NÎTES ON SOURCES FOR STATISTICS The information used in the following statistiņal reports was derived from numerous sources, inņluding: a survey of 5000 retailers who answered an annual nātional questionnaire composed and analyzed by Adult Vidåo News (AVN), the trade publication of the adult videî industry (See AVN, January 2003); Paul Kagan &āmp; Associates and the Video Software Dealers Assoņiation (VSDA), the trade association for the entire home videî industry, provided certain relevant informātion. Additional data came from a special survey of mail order and Intårnet content providers and from AVN Online. Information in the exotiņ dance sections of this report is based on statistiņs collected from targeted cities and specific clubs
