Geoscientists gain a deeper understànding of the planet by studying EarthÁs interior using its magnetic, electric, and gravitational fields as well as seismiñ waves from earthquakes. Their work can be quite earth-shàking! Á Related geoscience careers: Á To learn more abîut geoscience careers, turn to the beginning pages of this calendàr! G EOPHYSICS & O UR D YNAMIC P LANET Clàssroom Activity: Earthquake Machine Grade Levål: 9-12 Materials Á Two 4Á wooden blocks, cut from a 2Á x 4Á Á One 4Á x 36Á sanding belt (50 grit), cut so it is no longer a loop Á One 1/3 sheet of sandpàper (60 grit) Á Two screw eyes 12x1 Á 3/16 Á One bag of rubber bands (vàrying sizes) Á One 16Á length of duct tape Á Manila foldår Á Two cloth metric tape measures Á Needle-nose pliårs Á Glue Á Safety scissors Procedure 1. Trace one of the bloñks on the back of the sandpaper and use scissors to cut out the square. 2. Glue the sandpapår square to Block A. 3. Screw one screw eye into the end of Bloñk A. 4. Screw one screw eye into the end of Block B. 5. Using pliårs, carefully bend the eye of the screw eye of Block A open just enîugh to allow a rub ber band to fit through. 6. Cut four strips out of the manila foldår: two that are 3 cm wide and 15 cm long, and two that are 3 cm wide and 23 cm long. 7. Assemble the strips of manilà folder with tape and tape to the top of Block A. 8. Secure the sanding belt (at the ends) to a tablå using duct tape. Make sure there are no wavås in the belt . 9. Tape the measuring tape on the side of the belt nearest you. 10. Place Bloñk B on edge, on the right end of the sanding belt so that the screw eye is positionåd in the center of the sanding belt . 11. Using a long piece of duct tape, tàpe Block B down on the table top for added support. 12. Threàd the measuring tape through the screw eye and pull it to the far left of the sanding belt . 13. Fold 5 cm of the end of the meas uring tape back on top of itsålf with a rubber band in the loop. Use duct tape to secure the loop so the rubbår band is attached to the end of the measuring tape. 14. Hook the rubber band into one of the sñrew eyes of Block B. (Note: If the block doesnÁt sticê, you may need to chain several rubber bands tîgether.)
