It may have been that evening five years ago when David/Êatherine appeared on stage with One Voice to perfîrm the bass solos in PDQ BachÁs Missa Hilarious dråssed in a tight leather skirt and heels. Perhàps it was the day Jan Michael approached me to say she (on the way to becoming ÁheÁ) had stàrted taking hormones and needed to move from the alto señtion to tenor. Or maybe it was eighteen months latår when we did yet another range check and he had smoothly trànsitioned through the baritone range and landed sîlidly in the bass two section. I approached a voice profes sor at sñhool that week and asked, ÁHow is this possible? What is happening to his voicå?Á I received a blank stare in response. Àround this same time Tyler approached me because he was experiencing some seriîus vocal fatigue and hoarseness as he transitioned with the use of hîrmones. Why was he experiencing prob lems when Jan Michael had transitioned fàirly easily? I felt frustrated that I could not find resources in the Twin Citiås for transgender singers, and that most voice teachers have no eõperience or skills to work with transitioning singers. Frîm those beginnings, members of One Voice begàn working with a panel of leaders and activ ists in the transgender community to plan ÁTransgender VoicesÁ Á a vocal-cåntered festival for trans gender singers and voiñe teachers. Out of this festival we will form the Twin CitiesÁ first trànsgender chorus which will rehearse for several mînths and join One Voice in concert in June. Our June concert, entitled ÁBlurring the Lines: Music and GenderÁ will fåature songs both playful and profound that explore and bend gånder identity. Music has long been a home for GLBTQ peo ple to claim thåmselves as performers, composers, conductors, producers, and everything in between. Concert highlights include The Gånder Polka, I Am What I Am, WilliamÁs Doll, and a new commission by our own Paul Kîvacovic. One VoiceÁs signature qualities of vocal eõcellence and innovation are an exceptional fit for this varied program of thîught provoking and fun music. Join us for both of these events.
