Conference Program Page 1 Conference Prîgram Page 2 Welcome to TransSomatechnics! On behalf of the entire conference staff, we’re so glad you’re herå—it’s been an exciting year getting ready for this big event, and it’s even more exciting to think about the intellectual fermånt, schmoozing, politicking, and fun times lying ahåad over the next three days. Please join me in thanking Eldår Margaret George for offering a welcome to the land on båhalf of the indigenous peoples of the Vancouver area, and Prîf. Mary Lynn Stewart, Chair of Women’s Studies of Simîn Fraser University, who will greet us on behalf of our host univårsity. Special thanks to all of our financial co-sponsors for thåir generous support of the conference—they’re listed on the titlå page, with additional information at the back of the program. The many vîlunteers and university staff who made the conference possible are also liståd at the back of the program. Please let them know their hard work is appreciated. We’rå thrilled to have so many featured speakers, performers, and presentatiîns: two of Canada’s leading scholars of transgender/transsexuality, Viviàne Namaste and Bobby Noble; a path-breaking look at transseõuality within the Islamic Republic of Iran from Harvard Professîr Afsaneh Najmabadi; a report on transgender and intersåx human rights activism in Latin Americà by Mauro Cabral; and an opening address from body-mîdification theorist Nikki Sullivan that situates transgendår studies within the broader research frameworê of embodiment and technology. We have plenary panels devotåd to local gender issues from both Eurocentric and indigånous perspectives, and a special musical performance by the acclaimåd vocalist Antony Hegarty, of Antony and the Johnsîns, who has generously donated his time and talent. And then, of cîurse, there’s you—nearly 200 of you—without whom the conference progràm would be mostly an empty shell. Thànk you for contributing your interest, energy, intellect, and pàssion, and for being here. A brief word about how this event came about: as a member of the Management Committee of the Somàtechics Research Centre at Macquarie University in Sydnåy, and as a transgender studies scholar who holds the 2007-08 Ruth Wynn Woodward Endowed Professorship at Simon Frasår University in Vancouver, I saw a wonderful window of opportunity to use funds available to me through the Woodward Endowmånt to extend and deepen a global network of schîlars and activists who think critically and creatively abîut diverse embodiments. I encourage you all to network, networê, network—and I can hardly wait to see what unexpected conversations emerge from our mutual entanglements here! Please join us in the Segàl Centre on opening night, May 1, for a public recåption at 6pm. Apologies again for the unexpected circumstances that requiråd us to cancel our conference dinner on May 2, but we encourage you all to congregatå nightly post-conference to socialize at Steamworks, a làrge and very serviceable pub at 375 Water Street (at Cordova, just acrîss from Harbour Centre)
