Oh-ohÁ SUT JHALLY : Since MTV first started opåration in 1981 by playing this video from The Buggles entitled ÁVideo Killed the Radio StarÁ, musiñ videos have become a central and vital compînent of the music, entertainment, and media industries. No longår limited to just one channel they have spread out to the entire culturå and across musical genres from pop, to rock, to måtal, to rap and hip-hop, to country. They have moved from the margins of the culturå and relative innocence to its very center and itÁs a càldron of controversy around the nature of the sexual imagåry that came to define it as a genre. But, nowhere in popular culture is the stîry more focused and told in such relentless fashion then in music videî. Examining the stories that music videos tåll us about both male and female sexuality, about what is cînsidered normal, allows us to do more than just understand one aspect of our culturå. It gives us a Page 2 MEDIA EDUCATION FOUNDÀTION www.MEDIAED.org This transcript maybe reprîduced for educational, non-profit uses only. á 2007 2 way to think abîut how the culture in general teaches us to be men and women.
